I know what you're thinking based off the title, but it's not what you think! Along my journey to finding my forever job I thought to myself, "Self, who am I to turn down any opportunities that come my way?" So I recently had this amazing opportunity to work with a professor of mine while working with my minor (Event Planning and Hospitality Management). My professor owns an event management firm called the Vintage Experience. I was able to work with my professor on a vegan food tour around the beautiful city of Atlanta.
Before I get any further I want to make sure I give you all a little bit of a history lesson is to how I ended up with an opportunity like this. When I was attending university I fell under the category of a nontraditional student by working full time, and being financially independent. So because I worked full time I had to make sure I was making ends meat to take care of myself. During this time I worked a number of jobs in many different industries, so I became a jack of all trades. One of the many skills I picked up was event management. Luckily for me because my university had a little issue with communicating with me what the correct course studies were with a bachelor's in digital media and entertainment studies, I found out that I essentially had to take a minor in a degree field that was not communications based. Now anyone who knows me knows I live by very few things in life, and one of those things is: work smarter not harder. Sometimes this gets portrayed as be as lazy as possible and take the easy way out, and quite frankly I don't care. It's human nature to want to cut corners and be lazy. Besides higher education is a long journey so any way I could put my mind at ease I would. Now back to the history lesson! It was discovered pretty early that I had a lot of professional knowledge with project management and digital marketing and content creation, so about two weeks before I graduated my professor, and truthfully speaking a woman I also admire as a mentor asked me to work with her on an opportunity to see if I really liked the event management industry, so of course I jumped at the offer immediately.
The excitement I was feeling from such an amazing opportunity with an admired professor just had my heart racing. So the day of the event comes and it starts off a little shaky. For all of my friends reading from the event management industry you already know how it can be with your production schedule. So even though the day started a little late, we managed to actually begin working with our clients right on time. This was an incredible experience not only for the client, but for me as well because I was able to learn about Atlanta in a new way. Both the client and I were opened up to an entirely new way of life just by touring vegan restaurants here in Atlanta. Despite the fact that the production schedule was off and a million little things went wrong with finding WiFi or a hotspot to actually do my job of social media marketing, content creation, and batteries dying I made the best of my situation and was able to create a positive outcome for the clients, my professor, and my portfolio.
We ate everything from doughnuts, and cinnamon rolls to vegan hot dogs and poboy sandwhiches. Never mind my super wordy recap of this amazing experience, check out my video below to get an idea of how great it was and all of the amazing places here in Atlanta that are actually vegan friendly and local businesses to help our community thrive!
One of the biggest take aways I had from this experience, and any professional experience is what you make of the situation, and making sure when adversity strikes that you don't shut down. It was important that I kept it moving. While it was challenging for me to get the job done because I was having connection problems, I was still able to create an amazing product which ultimately is what is most important! I guess it was something important that I wanted to share with you, don't give up on your dreams or your search for happiness or a forever job.
