Sheriff Victor Hill, a popular and controversial Georgia Sheriff has been indicted on federal charges. According to the indictment, Hill violated the rights of four detainees with a legal restraint chair. The Sheriff pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Atlanta federal court, and says he will continue fighting crime while he fights the "politically-motivated" charges.

Hill, the first Black elected Sheriff of Clayton County, is being accused of violating the civil rights of four inmates at the Clayton County Jail in 2020, by restraining each of them in a restraint chair, a legal practice used by law enforcement across the country.

Hill's attorney, Drew Findling, said his client is innocent and never violated the rights of the four inmates in question. According to the attorney, the inmates who are making this claim are simply trying to bring allegations against the Sheriff due to their own legal troubles. Findling also highlighted the irony of police misconduct across the country that result in deaths of unarmed Black men, however the federal government seems to selectively not prosecute them but will go after his client instead.

According to Findling, the investigation into Hill started under President Donald Trump's administration. Many citizens are questioning the motivation behind this indictment.

Sheriff Hill was one of the first Sheriff's in America to stand against the federal government and refuse to house undocumented individuals in his jail for the federal agency ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement), citing their constitutional rights were being violated.

Attorney Bret Williams, a former federal prosecutor in Atlanta, told 11 Alive he believes the case will be difficult to prove, even if prosecutors have video from inside the jail.

Hill will continue serving as the Clayton County Sheriff.
