ATL Judge Christopher Ward Changes Lives

Dr. Rashad Richey says thank you to the judge that changed his life. The conversation with Deputy Chief Judge Christopher Ward of the City of Atlanta Municipal Court became emotional for Richey as he told the story of how the judge helped him transition to sobriety and likely saved his life.

Due to Judge Ward's intervention years ago, Dr. Richey no longer drinks and now helps others who are struggling to overcome this debilitating disease. Richey also actively works in the recovery community as a volunteer with Recovery Consultants of Atlanta (Board member), STAND Inc (federally-funded 501c3) and has organized fundraisers for MADD.

Today, Richey is a well-known social justice advocate, university professor, national television commentator and talk radio personality, who was recently voted "Most Trusted Voice in Atlanta" by readers of the Atlanta Business Journal and "Best Talk Radio Personality in Atlanta" by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

Richey's nonprofit organization, The Rashad Richey Foundation, mentors at-risk youth with the aim of ensuring they do not fall victim to circumstance. "I've made the mistakes for them and can help them avoid the pain that comes from not living in your purpose. I know what it's like to live beneath your potential, and I know what it's like to overcome", said Richey. For his philanthropic work and societal impact, Richey received the highly coveted Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama.

Judge Ward shares with Richey that his courtroom is one of the most efficient in the nation. The judge's judicial philosophy started when he was an attorney and worked with many compassionate judges in Georgia courts. He tells Richey he looks to a quote by George Washington Carver that shaped him to be the judge he is today, “Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the wrong. Sometime in life you will have been all of these.”
